Conversion Calculator

Enter every measurement Conversion Calculator asks for, then press Calculate. The result stays blank while you are still typing.

Press Calculate after the entries are in.

What Conversion is for

Conversion Calculator is the page to open when you need conversion from measurements you already have. It belongs with the other conversion calculators because that is the work this arithmetic supports. Type the entries first. The result stays hidden until you press Calculate, so a half-finished form never flashes a number you might mistake for the answer.

How to fill in this calculator

  1. Value. Enter the value this part of the job needs.
  2. From. Enter the value this part of the job needs. The choices include inch, foot, yard, mile, millimeter, centimeter.
  3. To. Enter the value this part of the job needs. The choices include inch, foot, yard, mile, millimeter, centimeter.

The formula in plain language

The Conversion result is the standard relationship for this job, applied to the numbers you type and the units on those fields. A conversion multiplies by an exact factor when the units are defined that way. An inch is exactly 25.4 millimeters. Temperature is the exception: Fahrenheit and Celsius meet at a shifted scale, not a simple multiple. Convert into the unit you will actually use next, then stop. A chain of rounded steps drifts. One conversion from the original measurement stays honest.

A worked example

Type 10 in Value, press Calculate, and note the conversion figure. Then type 20 and calculate again. A quantity that should double will double. A rate or a ratio may move by a different amount, and that difference is the thing to check against the formula above.

After this conversion result, inches to centimeters picks up a related measurement and pounds to kilograms answers the question that usually follows.

Mistakes that move the answer

  • Leave the unit selector on the unit you actually measured.
  • Press Calculate only after every required field is filled. An empty field is not a zero unless you typed zero.
  • Round the result to the precision you can buy or build. Extra decimals do not make a tape measure more accurate.

How to check the result

After Calculate shows the conversion result, redo the last operation with a pencil using the rounded figures on the screen. Matching that check means the inputs were read correctly. If you edit a label or a sentence in this HTML file, reload the page. The form and this article both live in the file, so the edit is what visitors will read.
